Pīwaiwaka (Fantail) Pounamu Whakairo Sculpture
Carved by Alex Sands in Hamilton from kawakawa-green pounamu sourced on the West Coast of New Zealand, this Pīwakawaka (Fantail) sculpture reveals natural dark flecking beneath a high polish. The tail features finely engraved whakairo, reflecting the time, precision, and meaning held in Māori carving.
In Māori tradition, the pīwakawaka is seen as a messenger and guardian of the forest, noted for its spirited presence, symbolising movement, change, and vitality.
Presented on a naturally shaped native-wood base, it is set with fitted progs and can be removed for display.
