Coastal shipping once played a very important part of freight movement around the coast. The expansion of the frozen meat trade brought extra business. Richardson and Company were a principal operator based in Napier and working the coast between the Bay of Plenty and Wellington plus some work out of Lyttleton to the Chatham Islands. They were also involved in salvage work and the stevedoring of overseas ships at the Port of Napier.
