MANU EARRINGS

Flight pathways of manu (birds) were a significant indicator for navigators while they were traveling on the ocean. Certain species of manu would stay close to land masses, so if sighted then this would indicate if they were coming close to landfall. Early Polynesians were familiar with flock migration and the direction of flight could indicate seasonal change, climate variation, a food source, or distance to land.
