Allium ampeloprasum var. ampeloprasum

Elephant garlic is an excellent and easy crop to grow, it is very hardy and requires little to no effort. More closely related to leeks than garlic, elephant garlic produces very large easy to peel cloves with a lovely mild (though we find ours quite hot!) flavour and is less likely to suffer from problems with rust.

Plant individual cloves in about May/June (autumn) in good free draining, fertile soil. To develop good sized bulbs regular foliar feeding with liquid seaweed or similar through the growing season is recommended.

Oftentimes your cloves will grow into a ‘round’ instead of a bulb with multiple cloves - a round looks more like an onion as it has not split into cloves - this is perfectly normal, you can either eat the round as you would a clove or keep to plant in the next season.

A planted round will typically develop into a very large elephant garlic bulb made up of 4-6 cloves.
