Meet the Kōtare (Kingfisher)

Say hello to the Kōtare, one of Aotearoa’s most striking native birds. Known for its vivid colouring and sharp-eyed focus, the Kōtare is a familiar and much-loved sight throughout New Zealand, often seen perched quietly on a powerline before darting swiftly toward its prey.

Found across the country in coastal areas, wetlands, farmland, and along rivers, the Kōtare is admired for its patience and precision. Despite its small size, it is a formidable hunter, relying on stillness and speed rather than flight endurance. As with many native species, habitat loss and environmental change pose ongoing challenges, making the protection of its natural surroundings increasingly important.

Handcrafted in Arrowtown by our Cheeky Beaks ceramics team, each Kōtare is individually shaped from white porcelain and carefully glazed to reflect the bird’s distinctive form and character. Whether displayed indoors or adding a touch of life to an outdoor space, it brings a sense of balance, focus, and quiet confidence wherever it lands.

Because every piece is handmade, each Kōtare is truly one of a kind. Subtle variations in shape and glaze ensure no two Cheeky Beaks creations are ever exactly the same.
