Mount Tapuae-o-Uenuku, or Tappy, can be seen throughout Marlborough on a clear day. It is the highest point in New Zealand outside of the Southern Alps. Looming above the upper South Island, it was nicknamed ‘the watcher’ by Captain Cook, as he sailed past in 1770. This mountain was also a training ground for Sir Edmund Hilary, completing a solo ascent in 1944.
