With screws, the larger the gauge number, the fatter the screw, for example 1" (25mm) x 8 guage is thinner than 1" (25mm) x 10 guage. With nails the opposite is true.
Their resistance to de-zinc-ification is also greater and therefore ideal for high quality marine work and under water use.
