Ammonites were a highly diverse subclass of extinct, predatory marine cephalopods with coiled, chambered shells, thriving from the Early Devonian (approx. 415 million years ago) until dying out with the dinosaurs 66 million years ago. Related to modern squid and octopuses, these ancestors of the nautilus used their shells for protection and buoyancy.
