Situated on China’s historic Loess Plateau in Shanxi Province, Chateau Rongzi cultivates vineyards between 950 and 1,300 metres above sea level where intense sunlight and dramatic day–night temperature swings help produce wines of remarkable freshness and structure. Founded in 2007 by Zhang Wenquan, the estate gained international recognition through the consultancy of Jean-Claude Berrouet, the legendary former winemaker of Chteau Pétrus. Through meticulous vineyard management, hand harvesting and maturation in French oak barrels, the winery crafts refined Bordeaux-inspired blends that reveal the growing sophistication of China’s emerging fine wine regions. Special Features

Brown Label, sometimes referred to as “Elegant Brown," reflects the distinctive character of high-altitude viticulture on the Loess Plateau. Vineyards sit around 1,100 metres above sea level where powerful sunshine and dramatic diurnal temperature shifts help preserve vibrant acidity while developing complex flavours. Each winter the vines must be buried beneath the soil to survive freezing Siberian winds — an extraordinary labour-intensive practice unique to northern Chinese viticulture. Crafted under the guidance of Jean-Claude Berrouet using hand-sorted fruit and maturation in fine French oak, the wine balances Cabernet Sauvignon structure with aromatic finesse, delivering silky tannins, mountain freshness and impressive purity of fruit. This refined Cabernet-led blend pairs beautifully with richly flavoured dishes that mirror its depth and structure. Herb-crusted venison, roast duck or slow-braised lamb highlight the wine’s cassis and cedar complexity, while its vibrant acidity lifts the richness of the meat.

As the wine evolves in the glass, savoury notes of graphite, tobacco and spice emerge, pairing wonderfully with truffle-infused mushroom risotto or roasted forest mushrooms. Aged cheeses such as Gouda or Comté also complement the wine’s silky tannins and long mineral finish. Perfect for Gifting or Sipping
