Hakataramea – The Township and Some Nearby Farms
It is now 140 years since the first buildings of the Hakataramea township began to appear as a small community was established at the new railway terminus. But the village, like many others in the rural South Island, did not grow as much as early developers had anticipated and in some respects remarkably little has changed since the 1890s. But then, as now, there has always been a close knit and supportive community enjoying the benefits of living in tranquil and attractive surroundings. Fortunately there is sufficient historical material in the archives, which together with recollections of exresidents, gives the foundation for the history we now present.
