The New Zealand Post Office was a government agency founded in 1881 when the Post Office Department was merged with the Electric Telegraph Department to create the New Zealand Post and Telegraph Department - renamed in 1959 to the New Zealand Post Office. In 1987, the New Zealand Post Office was split into three state-owned enterprises - one of which being the modern New Zealand Post.
