Overview: Frankincense oil is produced from the resins of the trees of the genus Boswellia serrata and Boswellia carterii. Boswellia serrata produces the Indian frankincense. The plant is native to India and the Punjab region of Pakistan. The word frankincense is derived from the old French meaning franc ences meaning pure incense. The resins are used to produce essential oils as well as used in powder form as a nutraceutical ingredient. The tree is suitable for production once it is 8 to 10 years old. Though the harvesting is done two to three times in a year, the later one is regarded as the best. Cheaper varieties are produced in Africa, but the chemical compositions are different.
