Hay Absolute

Overview: Hay absolute is produced by solvent extraction of hay (LOLIUM PERENNE). Hay is a generic term for dry grass. The grass is harvested in spring and once dried in sunlight, stored under the form of baling process. The selection of grass for hay absolute production is very important as weeds are not allowed in our industry. The dry hay produces some heat due to bacterial fermentation. This fermentation is necessary to transform some original components into others like natural coumarin which does not exist into the green grass. The hay is washed with hexane at a hot temperature. The concrete obtained (6%) is then transformed into absolute by ethanol washes. The yield in absolute from concrete is 65%. South France is, of course, always available at cheap prices and remains the most interesting source.
