Overview: Lemongrass oil is extracted through steam distillation of fresh or partly dried leaves of Cymbopogon flexuosus. India is one of the largest producers of lemongrass oil followed by Guatemala. Though the lemongrass is grown in several parts of India, the plants grown in the state of Orissa are regarded as top quality. The lemongrass plant requires very little care, it is suitable for preventing land erosion and can be grown as an intercrop. One hectare of land can give up to 50 tons of lemongrass and the extraction ratio is 0.6 to 1%. The lemongrass oil contains a high amount of Citral which gives it the distinct lemon flavour and citrusy aroma.The cost of production is low and hence it is an affordable range essential oil.
