Overview: The Tonka beans are the seeds of Dypterix odorata growing in tropical areas of South America. It was used as a vanilla substitute and as flavours in tobaccos. Now its use is restricted, in flavours as it contains coumarine. The beans are crushed into powder and then washed by ethanol. They are manufactured into absolute by regular process. With ageing this absolute can develop some heavy components called insoluble oils. In this case the absolute has to be reworked by several ethanolic washes.
Beans are coming from Venezuela and Brazil. Brazilian beans are richer in coumarine than Venezuelans.
