Rolex - 1984 Sea-Dweller 16660

WHAT WE LOVE:

The Rolex Sea-Dweller Ref. 16660, often nicknamed the “Triple Six", represents a pivotal moment in the evolution of Rolex’s professional dive watches. Introduced in the late 1970s and produced into the 1980s, the 16660 brought several major technical upgrades to the Sea-Dweller line while maintaining the rugged tool-watch ethos that made the model famous.

This reference introduced a sapphire crystal to the Sea-Dweller for the first time, replacing the acrylic crystals used on earlier references. Alongside this, Rolex significantly increased the depth rating to 1,220 metres (4,000 feet) and incorporated the now-standard unidirectional bezel, making it a much more modern diving instrument. The classic 40 mm Oyster case, helium escape valve, and black dial give the watch a purposeful and unmistakably professional aesthetic. This example comes with its original box and papers, booklets and service history.

WHAT'S INSIDE:

Inside beats the Rolex Caliber. 3035, an automatic chronometer-certified movement running at 28,800 vibrations per hour. This movement introduced the quickset date function, allowing the date to be adjusted independently from the hands — a major usability improvement over earlier Rolex calibres.

In 2021 the watch was serviced officially by Rolex, the case and bracelet have been refinished. The crown, crystal, dial, bezel insert and hands were also replaced.
