PLEASE EMAIL IF YOU WANT TO BE NOTIFIED SHOULD IT BECOME AVAILABLE
A large vintage wooden rocking horse with worn gilt detailing and rich patina, sourced in France after a short gallop from its Italian origin is in ready to grace a home with its striking form.
Hand-carved with an elegant, elongated form, this European rocking horse sits as much as a sculptural object as it does a traditional piece — full of character, age and striking presence.
Substantial in scale and weight, with beautifully time-softened surfaces and layered wear.
There is something inherently nostalgic about a rocking horse — but this one moves beyond that.
It’s proportions are what stop you. Slightly elongated, gently stylised, with a sense of movement even at rest. The carving is confident but not overworked, allowing the form to feel honest and expressive rather than precise.
The surface carries its history. A deep, dark base worn through to reveal flashes of gilt — not perfectly, not evenly, but in a way that only time can create. There is a suggestion that the gilding has been added to over the years, giving it a layered, almost painterly quality.
It feels solid in hand. Grounded. Not delicate or overly refined, but enduring — the kind of piece that has lived a life and continues to do so.
This is not a decorative reproduction trying to mimic age. It is a piece that has earned it.
Placed in a room, it shifts from object to presence. Something you notice each time you pass it, catching different light, different detail.

Styling Ideas
- Style as a sculptural statement against a limewash or plaster wall — let the form speak with minimal surrounding objects
- Place at the end of a linen bed for a quiet, collected European bedroom feel ( resist turning it into a clothes horse)
- Layer with antique paintings or ceramics to create a curated, gallery-like vignette.
- Position in a hallway or entry as an unexpected focal point that draws the eye. Don’t be afraid to elevate it onto an oversized sideboard!
- Pair with stone, timber or aged textures to enhance the patina and warmth of the wood
- Keep styling restrained — this piece works best when not over-accessorised
- Works equally well in a living space, bedroom or studio as a sculptural object
- Let natural light fall across the surface to highlight the worn gilt and carved detail
