French Forged Iron Adjustable Andirons 20th Century
A substantial pair of French forged iron andirons with rare adjustable spit supports, originally designed for both heating and hearth cooking. Heavy, architectural and deeply sculptural, these are the kind of pieces that blur the line between utility and art.
The hand-forged construction is immediately apparent in the hammer marks, thick iron stock and simple working details. Multiple ratchet supports along the uprights allowed a spit or cooking bar to be adjusted closer or further from the fire depending on heat. Smaller side hooks would once have held tools or cooking implements.
What makes this pair particularly compelling is the restraint of the design. No unnecessary ornamentation — just beautifully forged iron with strong silhouette and incredible presence. They sit just as comfortably in a contemporary limestone fireplace as they would in a centuries-old French farmhouse.
A striking decorative object even when not in use. Details
