A distinctive water bird of New Zealand and Australia, found on the southern lakes of Otago and Canterbury. Grebes are known for their courting displays, like walking on water and gifting waterweed.

They spend most of their time on the water, or nesting alongside reeds at the waters edge. They also carry their young on their backs.
