Paradise Shelducks are endemic to New Zealand. They pair for life and return to their nesting spot year after year. They are most often seen together.

Unusually for birds, the female is more eye-catching. She has a white head and chestnut body, while the male is black and grey. They’re commonly found in grasslands, wetlands and offshore islands, but also sports fields and parks.

Paradise Shelducks are gamebirds, but are hunted under strict controls and permits, to ensure the future of the species.
