The Stitchbird, otherwise known as the Hihi, means rays of the sun, and the bird’s name refers to the male’s yellow breast plumage – a reminder of sun and fire. One of the rarest birds in Aotearoa, the Hihi is a medium sized forest dweller endemic to the North Island. Having become extinct on the mainland in the late 19th century, the only naturally surviving population is today found on Te Hauturu-o-Toi in Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf.
