WHAT ARE INTESTINAL PATHOBIONTS?
Unlike pathogenic microbes which don’t normally reside in the intestinal tract, pathobionts are opportunistic and potentially pathological microbes which are commonly found as part of the indigenous human gut microbiota. Under normal circumstances, they live as non-harmful microbes in the intestinal tract, with levels of these organisms kept “in check" by the beneficial flora in the digestive tract. When not regulated, pathobionts are likely to overgrow, causing a chronic inflammatory response, immune disturbances and numerous systemic disorders.

Structurally the intestinal tract is lined with a mucosal layer which includes a commensal mucosal biofilm. Made from polysaccharides, cell fragments, and proteins, these biofilms form a viscous substance that cements the colonising microbial communities to the intestinal wall. Pathobiont biofilms, however, house various microbes which have been cast-out from the commensal mucosal biofilm and have become pathogenic. Pathobiont biofilms form a powerful shield, providing shelter to dormant pathogenic cells and protection from the body’s immune responses.
Antimicrobial herbs which target pathogenic biofilms can help eradicate the overgrowth of persistent dysbiotic microbes, aiding in the restoration of normal commensal ecology and reduction of symptoms.
