Berberine from Indian barberry and milk thistle exert a synergistic effect. Milk thistle supports healthy liver function and reduces free radicals formed in the body. Berberine typically has low oral bioavailability, and its cellular uptake is limited by the P-glycoprotein efflux pump located on cell membranes. Milk thistle's flavanolignans act as inhibitors of this pump, supporting berberine’s cellular uptake (Figure 1).
