The scent that clung to those textiles became so associated with genuine Eastern luxury that a shawl without a hint of patchouli was assumed to be a cheap imitation — and Victorian society soon embraced the fragrance in its own right. Centuries later, patchouli found a second life as the defining scent of the 1960s counterculture movement, prized for its warmth and its ties to Eastern spirituality.
