Waves is a book project in collaboration between Ted Whitaker and Fraser Austin. This book is a virtual tour in search of ocean waves within 3D gaming environments. The concept and quest to find the ‘perfect wave’ is shared in both surfing communities and in 3d motion design. Discovering perfect waves, while subjective, require time and dedication in navigating remote coastlines and synchronising with layered combinations of wind, tide and swell. In virtual 3d environments, it requires the same dedication in mastering the physics of hydrodynamics – a long considered benchmark in 3d graphics. Waves is a textured and meditative watercolour series, where ink bleeds into the pages, blending virtual and physical worlds.
