Silver Bismarck Palm
One of the world's most stunning palms! Very hard to find these in NZ. These young plants are 2 to 2.5 years old, 40 to 50 cm tall, and are now starting to transition from putting out strap leaves to palmate leaves with their characteristic silvery greenish-blue colour complete with a purple tinge.
Their growth rate is beginning to speed up and they are keen to get out of their planter bags, so they will need to be planted out or put into a large, deep pot reasonably soon.
Bismarckia nobilis is native to Madagascar and is a warm temperate to tropical palm which needs plenty of space and full sun. It will tolerate drought and light frost when well established. It is also quite resistant to pests and disease and can handle a wide range of soil types so long as they are well drained.
In good conditions Bismarckia grows fairly quickly into a large and stunning tree but will also look amazing in a large pot. Its bold form and startling silver-blue foliage make for great visual impact. In seedlings and young plants, the leaves are tinged with an unreal purple colour.
