Their characteristic that is most important to people in the warmer areas of New Zealand is that they need much less winter cold to flower well. We have two varieties, both yellow, chosen because yellow is so uncommon in herbaceous peonies. They are more wind resistant than herbaceous peonies and I have seen a Bartzella with 50 open blooms which still did not need staking. A mature plant has the stature of a shrub (~90cm) but dies to the ground each autumn. Raspberry Sundae
