Leslie Adkin: Farmer Photographer by Athol McCredie

An exceptional collection of work by one of New Zealand’s most esteemed early photographers.

Leslie Adkin (1888–1964) was a Levin farmer, photographer, geologist, ethnologist, and explorer — a true all-rounder who used his camera to document his research, farm life, and family. His much-loved photographs from 1900 to the 1930s are among the highlights of Te Papa’s historical photography collection. This book, featuring over 150 images selected by Te Papa’s Curator of Photography, Athol McCredie, places Adkin’s work firmly within the story of New Zealand photography and celebrates a remarkable body of work. McCredie’s accompanying text offers rich insights into Adkin’s eventful life and his deep affection for his wife Maud, captured in intimate, timeless photographs that remain as engaging today as when they were first taken.
