‘the place we are nourished’ and is the word for both land and placenta, as we are all born from the womb of Papatuanuku. The traditional practice of burying the whenua (placenta) and pito (umbilical cord) connects a newborn baby to their ancestral land. This Maori earring represents our connection to our whenua.
