The mere is a short, broad-bladed hand weapon shaped like an enlarged teardrop. It was traditionally used to strike or jab an opponent in the body or head.
The mere is a symbol of high status and is believed to bring its owner courage and strength. While it shares the same overall design as a patu, the key difference lies in the material: patu can be made from wood, stone, or whale bone, whereas mere are specifically crafted from greenstone (pounamu).
