Rei Niho - Notched
The Rei Niho is a very old style of Taonga - dating back to before European contact in Aotearoa.
Rei Niho were traditionally made using a slice of a Whale's Tooth (Niho = Tooth).
The notching on the side is called Patapata, and is currently understood by some to symbolize whakapapa / genealogy.
This variety of Pounamu is a relatively rare kind - featuring amazing Brown and Gold hues, which a large degree of translucency.
