3 Norns Artwork by Karen Chappelow
The three Norns – Urd, Verdandi, and Skuld, oversee the whole process of birth and the journey to death at the base of Yggdrasil (the tree of life). They tend to the tree, watering its roots. They carve the future of everybody born onto runes and weave the tapestry of fate. The golden threads are evident in my painting as is the pole-dancing skeleton that represents death, always depicted on a black thread running north to south. Two swans keep the Norns company and signify birth and new life, hence my rubber ducky represents the beginning of life.
