MADÉ Whakamarumaru Pounamu Necklace

Whakamarumaru
to shelter and protect

Some pieces are designed simply to adorn.
Others are created to carry meaning.

Whakamarumaru draws its inspiration from the idea of protection and guardianship. In te reo Māori the word speaks of sheltering another, of offering safety, strength and presence.

The bold gold stainless steel Byzantine chain forms a protective circle around the wearer, while the softly polished pale pounamu drop rests at the centre like a quiet talisman. The contrast between the strong industrial chain and the gentle translucence of the stone reflects the balance between resilience and calm.

This is a piece with presence. Grounded. Steady. Protective.

The pale green pounamu has been shaped into a smooth elongated drop, allowing the natural markings of the stone to remain visible. Suspended from a solid ring connection, it moves gently with the wearer, catching the light and revealing the depth of colour within the stone.

Designed to sit confidently at the collarbone, Whakamarumaru can be worn as a statement on its own or layered with other pieces. It carries both strength and elegance, making it equally at home with a simple white shirt or an evening look.

Each piece is individually assembled and every stone is unique.

About Pounamu

Pounamu, often known as New Zealand greenstone, is a treasured stone of deep cultural significance to Māori. Found primarily in the rivers and mountains of Te Wai Pounamu, the South Island of Aotearoa New Zealand, it has been valued for centuries as a taonga representing strength, connection and enduring relationships.

Traditionally, pounamu is gifted rather than purchased for oneself, as it is believed to carry the energy and intention of the giver. When a piece is given, it becomes a symbol of respect, protection and lasting connection between people.

Each stone is formed naturally within the earth and shaped over time by river and landscape. Because of this, every piece of pounamu has its own character, colour and markings. No two are ever identical.

The pounamu used in this piece has been sourced from riverbeds on the West Coast of the South Island. The colour may range from soft, translucent greens through to deeper forest tones depending on the individual stone.

We honour the cultural significance of pounamu and present it with respect, acknowledging its place as a taonga within Aotearoa.
