Kiwisaver Significant Hardship Withdrawal

The KiwiSaver Hardship Withdrawal allows families to access part of a loved one’s KiwiSaver savings when they are facing significant financial hardship, including difficulty paying funeral or burial expenses. This withdrawal is assessed by the person’s KiwiSaver provider and can help cover essential costs such as the casket, cremation or burial fees, venue hire, transport, or other required funeral services. To apply, families must provide documents such as an itemised funeral account, proof of financial hardship, and identification. While KiwiSaver funds cannot cover the full balance of an account, the provider may approve a partial withdrawal to relieve immediate financial pressure. This option gives whānau in Auckland and throughout New Zealand an additional way to manage funeral costs during a difficult time.
