hand carved netsuke A mischievous water goblin carving, holding and protecting his favourite food; cucumber. This magnificent work of art is hand carved in deer antler by Fumio Noguchi.

In the artists words:

The Kappa is a mischievous water goblin of Japanese folklore. It is one of the best known Japanese mythical creatures with webbed hands and feet. This Kappa is holding his favourite food - cucumber and he is watching carefully to keep his food. He has a dish on top of his head filled with water (otherwise they get very weak). I inlaid abalone shell to represent the water dish. His back is covered with like Tortoise shell. Webbed hand and feet to swim freely.

The Grumpy Guardian of the Cucumber: A Kappa in Antler by Fumio Noguchi

Behold a creature of mischief, myth, and an intense personal attachment to vegetables. Master carver Fumio Noguchi brings to life the legendary Kappa in this utterly charming and humorous sculpture, carved from a single piece of deer antler.

This is no fearsome water demon. This little fellow has been caught red-handed (or green-handed) with his favorite prize. Crouched low, he clutches a plump cucumber to his chest with a look of pure, possessive determination. His expression says it all: "This is mine. Don't you dare even look at it!"

Fumio's attention to detail is on full display - the texture of the scaly skin, the shell on his back to the determined grip of his tiny webbed fingers. This piece is a perfect fusion of Japanese folklore, wonderful artistry, and a terrific sense of humour that will bring a smile to your face.

A delightful addition to any collection, this Kappa proves that the way to a water goblin’s heart is most certainly through his stomach.
