- A beautiful New Zealand Pounamu Tiki pendant hand carved by Kyohei Noguchi. A Taonga for Generations

This is a significant taonga (treasure), a medium/large Hei Tiki carved from New Zealand pounamu, designed to be worn and passed down as a family heirloom. Its form follows a traditional design: one three-fingered hand rests on the chest, the other on the thigh, a pose that is often seen on the tiki design.

The stone itself is exceptional. It is a deep, dark green, dramatically marked by areas of deep rusty-red. This colouration, caused by mineral deposits during the pounamu's formation, gives the pendant a unique and distinctive character, making it truly one of a kind.

The Hei Tiki is traditionally connected to themes of family and continuity. It is widely regarded as a symbol of Hine-te-iwaiwa, a celebrated ancestress associated with fertility, childbirth, and strong family values. For this reason, the tiki is regarded as a figure that honours the bond between generations, and the creation of new life.

Notable in this piece is the design of the mouth and tongue. Kyohei has carved a split tongue. I have a book which refers to this particular design feature which has been seen in some very old tiki.

These pendants were traditionally highly valued and wearers were seen to possess clarity of thought, loyalty, great inner knowledge and strength of character.
