Mooneys Fur began in Dunedin in 1912 as a trader of rabbit skins and grew into one of New Zealand’s best-known furrier companies. Through much of the 20th century it supplied fur garments, employing skilled craftsmen and selling to department stores and the public. As fashions and attitudes shifted, Mooneys adapted by focusing on smaller fashion pieces and restoration work. In 1998 the business was bought and relaunched as Mooneys Furriers Ltd, making bespoke items from local fur such as possum and rabbit, and offering repair and restyling services. Today it is regarded as one of the last traditional furriers in New Zealand, blending heritage craft with modern design.
