Alocasia odora 'Batik' - 2.5L / 17cm / Medium
Alocasia odora ‘Batik’ is a rare and highly ornamental elephant ear prized for its dramatic cream and soft yellow marbled variegation across broad, glossy green leaves. Each leaf is uniquely patterned with intricate, almost hand painted veining that resembles batik fabric, giving this cultivar its name. Larger and more architectural than many Alocasia, it forms an upright clump with impressive tropical presence while still being suitable for bright indoor spaces in New Zealand homes. When well grown, it produces bold foliage with strong contrast, making it a true collector’s statement plant. Position & Light Prefers bright indirect light to maintain strong variegation. Can tolerate gentle morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon sun which may scorch the lighter sections. In New Zealand homes, position near an east facing window or in a bright north facing room set back from direct sun. Lower light may reduce colour contrast. Watering Keep soil consistently moist during active growth but never waterlogged. Allow the top few centimetres of mix to dry slightly before watering again. Reduce watering frequency in winter while preventing the mix from fully drying out. Ensure excellent drainage to avoid root rot. Humidity Thrives in moderate to high humidity. While adaptable to average indoor conditions, higher humidity helps prevent browning edges and supports larger leaf development. Soil Use a rich but well draining mix. A blend of quality indoor potting mix with added bark and perlite works well. Good airflow around the roots is essential. Feeding Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength. Pause feeding during winter dormancy or slower growth periods. Growth Habit An upright, clumping grower with large shield shaped leaves emerging from thick stems. Older leaves will naturally yellow and drop as new growth appears. Difficulty Moderate to advanced. Best suited to growers comfortable maintaining consistent moisture, warmth and strong light. Pet Safety Toxic if ingested. Contains calcium oxalate crystals that may cause irritation to pets and humans.
