Ficus 'Hawaii' - 2.5L / 17cm / Medium
Ficus 'Tuffy' 'Hawaii'
Ficus 'Tuffy' 'Hawaii' is a compact, upright variegated cultivar with thick, glossy leaves edged in creamy yellow variegation. Naturally dense and neatly branching, it has a tree-like form that’s perfect for shaping as a small indoor specimen or bonsai. Compared to other ficus types, 'Tuffy' stays tidier and more contained, with sturdy stems and a strong central trunk when allowed to mature. The variegated ‘Hawaii’ form brings an extra pop of brightness to shelves, desks or light-filled corners, combining classic bonsai form with tropical flair.
This is a resilient, low-maintenance ficus that adapts well to indoor life and offers year-round structure and colour.
Toxic if ingested. Irritating sap. Comprehensive Care Instructions for Ficus 'Tuffy' 'Hawaii' Lighting Requirements
Indoors: Thrives in bright, indirect light. Some morning sun is fine. Low light may cause variegation to fade and growth to slow.
Outdoors (in mild climates): Best in part shade or dappled sun. Protect from frost and hot, dry winds. Watering Regimen
During the Growing Season (Spring to Early Autumn):
Water when the top 2–4cm of soil is dry. Keep soil evenly moist but never soggy. Ensure pot has good drainage.
Cooler Months:
Water less frequently. Let soil dry deeper before rewatering as growth slows. Temperature & Humidity
Performs well in indoor temperatures between 18°C–26°C. Avoid cold drafts and heaters.
Tolerates normal household humidity but benefits from misting in dry indoor conditions. Fertilizing
Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Pause feeding in winter unless growing under lights. Pruning & Maintenance
Responds well to regular pruning. Trim to maintain shape, encourage branching or bonsai form.
Wipe leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and enhance colour. Repotting
Repot every 2–3 years or when rootbound. Use a free-draining potting mix. Suitable for root pruning if grown as bonsai. Pests & Troubleshooting
May attract scale, mealybugs or spider mites in warm indoor conditions. Treat early and maintain good airflow.
Leaf drop may occur with overwatering, underwatering or environmental changes. Allow time to adjust after relocation. Important Note: Mini Tree, Big Personality
Ficus 'Tuffy' 'Hawaii' offers the structure of a miniature tree with the ease of a houseplant. Its colourful variegation and manageable size make it an ideal choice for small-space styling or indoor bonsai.
