Green Variegated Alocasia Portei is a dramatic, large growing elephant ear prized for its deeply cut, architectural foliage marbled with soft green variegation. Unlike high contrast white forms, this selection carries layered tones of mid to pale green that create subtle dimension across its heavily lobed leaves. As it matures, the foliage becomes more elongated and intricately divided, giving it a wild, tropical silhouette that commands attention. Fast growing in warmth and light, this is a collector grade statement plant suited to spacious, bright interiors. Position & Light Prefers bright indirect light to maintain strong growth and defined variegation. Can tolerate gentle morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon sun which can scorch foliage. In New Zealand homes, position near an east facing window or in a bright north facing room set back from direct sun. Insufficient light may reduce vigour. Watering Keep soil lightly and consistently moist during active growth. Allow the top few centimetres of mix to dry before watering again. Never allow the plant to sit in water. Reduce watering frequency in winter but do not allow the mix to dry out completely for extended periods. Humidity Thrives in moderate to high humidity. Higher humidity supports larger leaves and helps prevent browning edges, especially on variegated sections. Ideal for grouped plant displays or naturally humid rooms. Soil Use a rich but well draining mix. A blend of quality indoor potting mix with added bark and perlite works well. Good drainage and airflow around the roots are essential. Feeding Feed monthly through spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength. Pause feeding during winter dormancy or slower growth periods. Growth Habit An upright clumping grower that forms thick stems and increasingly large, deeply divided leaves. Mature plants can become substantial in size and require adequate space.
