Kermadec Nikau Palm (NZ Native) - Rhopalostylis baueri - 8L / 25cm / L
Mainland New Zealand's iconic Nikau palm (Rhopalostylis sapida) has a subtropical cousin on our very own Kermadec Islands. The faster-growing Kermadec Nikau grows into a more elegant, open-crowned version than the mainland variety when planted in a warm sheltered shady position. Indoors they do best in bright filtered light and with constant access to just a little moisture.
Available only in urban Auckland & Whangarei.
Ideal for Beginner plant keepers or beyond.
Light Requirements: Bright Indirect Light is ideal, can handle part-day Sun when older.
Moisture & Soil Requirements: Prefers evenly moist soil with good drainage in warm seasons - never soggy soil. Water when the first few centimetres of soil are dry.
Growth & Nutrients: Palm tree growth, central new growth spike gradually opens and softens to reveal gentle arching fronds. Suits medium to large apartments or houses of any size. Feed with a general-purpose fertiliser for containers across spring-summer. Trunks only develop when planted in the ground but reveal attractive circular rings from the fallen fronds. Adult crown measures 4 metres wide.
Temperature, Humidity & Ambient requirements: Prefers warm humid environments inside but can deal with most home environments. Grows well outdoors in frost-free northern when sheltered from wind, cold and harsh sun.
