'White' Staghorn Fern - Platycerium bifurcatum - 1L / 14cm / Small
Platycerium bifurcatum 'White'
Not your regular staghorn, Platycerium bifurcatum 'White' is a stunning cultivar, prized for its pale, silvery-green mature fronds coated in soft, powdery trichomes. This dense, velvety covering gives the plant a frosted, whitewashed look—especially striking when mounted on timber or hanging in bright indoor spaces. Like all P. bifurcatum, it grows two types of fronds: round, shield-like basal fronds that anchor the plant, and elegant antler-shaped fertile fronds that fork outward into sculptural, trailing arms.
This is a hardy, fast-growing fern ideal for bathrooms, covered patios, or bright interiors with filtered light. It thrives mounted on a board or in a hanging basket with good airflow and humidity.
Mature form example shown in main photo, size grades of juvenile plants for purchase are shown next.
Non-toxic to pets. Comprehensive Care Instructions for Platycerium bifurcatum 'White' Lighting Requirements
Indoors: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can damage the trichomes and bleach fronds.
Outdoors (mild climates): Best in filtered light or part shade. Protect from wind and midday sun. Watering Regimen
Mounted Plants:
Soak the entire mount for 10–20 minutes once a week in warm months, or when dry. Let dry completely before re-hanging.
Potted Plants:
Water when the medium is nearly dry. Avoid letting water pool in the crown. Temperature & Humidity
Thrives in warm, humid conditions between 16°C–28°C.
Humidity over 50% is ideal—mist regularly or display in a bathroom or near a humidifier. Fertilizing
Feed monthly in spring and summer with a diluted balanced fertiliser. Add to soak water or apply around the base of the plant. Pruning & Maintenance
Do not remove the basal fronds—they protect the roots and absorb moisture.
Only remove fully brown, dry fronds if needed. Avoid touching the fuzzy coating on fertile fronds. Repotting or Remounting
Remount or refresh every 2–3 years. Use sphagnum moss and a wood backing, secured with soft ties or fishing line. Ensure good drainage and airflow. Pests & Troubleshooting
Rarely affected by pests. Check for scale or mealybugs in warm indoor conditions.
Brown tips or crisp edges often indicate low humidity or underwatering. Important Note: A Bifurcatum with a Twist
Platycerium bifurcatum 'White' offers all the hardiness of classic staghorns, with the added elegance of a cool, silvery finish. Perfect for collectors or first-time staghorn growers wanting a sculptural, low-fuss feature that thrives mounted and admired. How to Mount and Style Staghorn Ferns Indoors or Out
Staghorn ferns (Platycerium species) are epiphytic plants that naturally grow on trees, making them perfect for mounting on wooden boards, slabs, or hanging plaques. This display method isn’t just beautiful—it mimics their natural environment, allowing for better airflow, drainage and long-term health. What You’ll Need to Mount a Staghorn Fern
A healthy staghorn fern (juvenile or mature)
A wooden board, slab or plaque (untreated timber, cork, or driftwood work well)
Sheet sphagnum moss (soaked and wrung out)
Soft garden twine, jute, or fishing line
Galvanised nails or screws (if using twine)
Drill or hammer (optional for wall hooks)
Wall hook or sturdy chain for hanging Mounting Steps
1. Soak the Moss
Soak your sphagnum moss in water for 10–15 minutes, then squeeze out excess moisture. You want it damp, not dripping.
2. Prep the Board
Choose a board size appropriate to the size of your fern. If you’re mounting outdoors, choose weatherproof timber. Add a hook, D-ring or chain at the back before mounting so it’s ready to hang.
3. Build the Moss Pad
Place a thick mound of damp moss in the centre of the board—roughly the size of the fern’s basal fronds (the round, shield-like base). This will cushion the roots and hold moisture.
4. Position the Fern
Place the staghorn fern on top of the moss with the shield fronds facing up. Centre it vertically and horizontally. Ensure the base of the plant sits flush with the moss—don’t bury it.
5. Secure the Fern
Gently wrap twine or fishing line around the board, over the basal fronds and back around the board several times. Criss-cross the twine to hold the fern securely without strangling it. Tie off firmly at the back. Avoid damaging the fuzzy frond surface.
6. Let It Settle
Place the mounted fern in a shaded area for a few day
