Staghorn Fern - Platycerium superbum - 1L / 14cm / Small

Platycerium superbum pups

A true statement staghorn, Platycerium superbum is one of the most impressive and architectural fern species available. Unlike branching types, it produces a single, massive shield frond that forms a dramatic, upright nest, from which long, broad antler-like fronds extend outward in bold, sculptural layers. Mature specimens develop an almost shielded, bowl-like form, giving it a powerful presence whether mounted or displayed in a large hanging basket.

Native to Australia, this species is slower growing but far more imposing than common staghorns, eventually reaching impressive sizes with the right care. It thrives in bright, airy environments and becomes a true living feature piece over time.

Mature form example shown in main photo, size grades of juvenile plants for purchase are shown next.

Non-toxic to pets. Comprehensive Care Instructions for Platycerium superbum

Lighting Requirements

Indoors: Bright, indirect light is essential. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch fronds, but too little light will slow growth significantly.
Outdoors (mild climates): Best in filtered light or bright shade. Protect from strong sun and heavy wind.

Watering Regimen

Mounted Plants:
Water by soaking or thoroughly drenching the root zone once a week in warmer months. Allow to dry slightly between waterings.
Potted Plants:
Water when the medium begins to dry out. Ensure excellent drainage and avoid water sitting in the crown.

Temperature & Humidity

Thrives in warm conditions between 18°C–28°C.
Prefers moderate to high humidity. Ensure good airflow to prevent rot, especially in cooler conditions.

Fertilizing

Feed monthly during spring and summer with a diluted liquid fertiliser. Apply around the root zone or add to soak water.

Pruning & Maintenance

Do not remove the shield frond, even as it browns—it protects the plant and stores nutrients.
Remove only fully dead fertile fronds if needed. Avoid handling the surface of fronds excessively.

Repotting or Remounting

Best grown mounted or in a basket rather than traditional pots.
As it matures, it will attach itself firmly and rarely needs remounting.

Pests & Troubleshooting

Generally low maintenance but may attract scale or mealybugs in warm conditions.
Blackening at the base can indicate overwatering or poor airflow.

Important Note: A True Feature Plant

Platycerium superbum is not a background plant—it’s a centrepiece. With time, space, and the right conditions, it becomes a large, sculptural specimen that defines a room or outdoor setting.
