Mahogany - Syngonium podophyllum - 1L / 14cm / Small
Syngonium Mahogany is a rich, moody arrowhead plant prized for its deep burgundy to chocolate toned foliage that darkens as it matures. New leaves often emerge with a warm reddish flush before settling into saturated mahogany hues, creating depth and contrast within the plant. Compact when young but capable of trailing or climbing over time, this variety brings bold colour without overwhelming a space. Its darker tones pair beautifully with lighter interiors and natural timber, making it a versatile choice for shelves, hanging pots or small supports. Position & Light Prefers bright indirect light to maintain strong colouring. Can tolerate medium light but tones may soften and growth may slow. Avoid harsh direct sun which can scorch foliage. In New Zealand homes, position near an east facing window or in a bright north facing room set back from direct sun. Watering Allow the top third of the potting mix to dry before watering. Keep evenly moist during active growth but never waterlogged. Reduce watering frequency in winter when growth slows. Ensure good drainage. Humidity Thrives in moderate humidity but adapts well to typical indoor conditions. Higher humidity encourages fuller growth and healthier leaf edges. Soil Use a well draining indoor potting mix with added bark or perlite for airflow. A light aroid style blend supports strong root development. Feeding Feed monthly through spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength. Pause feeding in winter. Growth Habit A compact clumping plant when young that will gradually trail as stems lengthen. Can be allowed to cascade or lightly supported for a fuller display. Difficulty Easy to moderate. Suitable for beginners wanting reliable growth with dramatic darker foliage. Pet Safety Toxic if ingested. Contains calcium oxalate crystals that may cause irritation to pets and humans.
