Russian researchers first discovered, back in the 1950’s, that inhabitants of several remote mountainous areas of Siberia had significantly more centenarians than the greater Russian population. It took years of biological detective work to conclude that the Russian lifespan and health were being undermined by the higher level of deuterium in their water. In contrast, the Siberians benefitted from consuming a lower deuterium level in their glacial-melt water.

The researchers were baffled and astonished at the implications of their conclusion but had no explanation for the biological mechanisms involved.
