Then There Were Five (Loreta Fin) for String Orchestra
5/4 time is an irregular time signature which is not often used in educational ensemble music.
Students may like to listen to famous pieces written in 5/4, such as Take 5, by Dave Brubeck, Mission Impossible Theme, by Lalo Schifrin or Mars from The Planets, by Gustav Holst.
This original piece, by Loreta Fin, uses a 3 2 feel, and at times, a 2 3 feel.
The syncopated rhythm is repetitive and has a lilting quality, while the middle section changes to 3/4 time, before returning to the main ideas.
This piece is for Loreta’s 5 grandchildren, who have often been the inspiration for her pieces.
