- ZZ plants can tolerate low light conditions, but prefer medium to bright indirect light. They can grow in areas with fluorescent light, but direct sunlight can cause the leaves to scorch and brown.
- Water ZZ plants are drought tolerant and prefer to be underwatered than overwatered. Water the plant every 2–3 weeks, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Water more often in brighter light and less often in lower light.
- Temperature ZZ plants can be grown outdoors in warm, frost-free areas, but they should not be exposed to temperatures below 60°F (15°C).
- Soil Use a well-draining potting mix, such as a cactus and succulent mix. You can also add ingredients like perlite or lava rocks to increase soil aeration.
- Fertilizing During the growing season (spring and summer), apply a houseplant fertilizer every 2–3 months. Reduce fertilizing to once a month during the winter.
- Humidity ZZ plants can tolerate average home humidity and dry air.
- Toxicity ZZ plants can be irritating to humans, cats, and dogs if ingested, so keep them out of reach of pets and children.
- Pruning Remove dead or damaged leaves or leaflets as needed. Wear gloves when pruning because the sap can cause skin reactions.
