What It Is Classic form, engineered weight

The Wittner Ultralight is a high-tech composite tailpiece that keeps the visual lines of a traditional violin tailpiece while engineering out the excess weight. The "Ultra" composite material is denser than standard plastics used on budget instruments but significantly lighter than ebony or boxwood, reducing the load on the tailgut and allowing the instrument top to vibrate more freely.

Four built-in fine tuners are integrated into the design rather than added on as separate adjusters. This keeps the profile clean and eliminates the risk of separate tuner screws working loose. For student violins, where precise tuning by ear is still developing, four fine tuners make every practice session easier for both student and teacher.

Wittner has been making tailpieces and fine tuners in Germany for decades and is the standard workshop recommendation for student and intermediate setups. This tailpiece ships with an adjustable nylon tailgut and is ready to fit.

Who It's For Students, teachers, workshops Students

Four built-in fine tuners mean easier, more accurate tuning at every practice and lesson. Reduces lesson time spent correcting tuning. Teachers

A reliable instrument-side upgrade that simplifies tuning for younger students and reduces interruptions during lessons. Workshop fitting

Our standard recommendation during violin setup and repair. We fit this routinely at Symphonia Strings.

Fitting A luthier fitting is the right call

Tailpiece fitting involves removing all four strings, adjusting the tailgut length so the afterlength is correct for the instrument, and re-stringing at full tension. Getting the afterlength right matters for tone and resonance. An incorrectly set tailgut can suppress overtones or create wolf tones on certain notes.

The adjustable nylon tailgut that comes with the Ultralight makes accurate fitting easier than traditional gut tailgut, but the process still benefits from experience. We are happy to fit this tailpiece in store. Just bring in your violin.

Once fitted, the fine tuners are adjusted by turning the thumb screws after each string is brought close to pitch with the peg. No tools required for ongoing use.

Care Longevity Low maintenance

Wipe down the tailpiece when cleaning the instrument. The fine tuner screws can be cleaned with a dry cloth. If a screw becomes stiff, a tiny amount of petroleum jelly on the thread will help. The composite material does not require any treatment or conditioning.

Frequently Asked Questions When is it worth upgrading a tailpiece?

When the existing tailpiece is broken, warped, or fitted with heavy metal clip-on tuners that are adding unnecessary weight. Also useful when a student violin came with only one fine tuner on the E string and tuning the lower strings by peg alone has become a frustration in lessons. Does fitting require a luthier, or can I do it at home?

We recommend a luthier for correct tailgut adjustment. The nylon tailgut on this model is adjustable, which makes it more forgiving than traditional gut, but getting the afterlength right for your specific instrument requires a bit of knowledge and experience. We fit this in store. Will changing the tailpiece affect the sound?

Potentially yes, in a positive direction. Reducing tailpiece weight allows the instrument top to vibrate with less load, which can improve projection and response. For student instruments that came with heavy fitted tuners, the improvement is often noticeable. Results vary by instrument. Do all four fine tuners come included?

Yes. The four fine tuners are integrated into the tailpiece body. No additional hardware is needed. The adjustable nylon tailgut is also included. What sizes are available?

4/4, 3/4, 1/2, and 1/4. Measure your violin or check the label inside the instrument before ordering. If you are unsure, bring the instrument in store and we will advise the right size.
