Our first mobile design features:

-The flowing wave shapes represent Tangaroa, the atua (guardian) of the ocean. The koru-inspired curves symbolise movement, growth, and the flow of life, gently guiding pēpi into a calm and peaceful space.🌊

-The maunga reflects strength, stability, and identity. In te ao Māori, maunga are deeply connected to whakapapa reminding pēpi of their roots, belonging, and connection to the land.⛰️

-The waka symbolises journey, migration, and connection. It represents the voyaging ancestors and the idea that pēpi are on their own sacred journey through life, guided and protected✨

-The whare represents home, warmth, and whānau. It reflects a place of love, safety, and nurturing, where pēpi is surrounded by care and connection.❤️

1. Te Tūāpapa The Foundation (Arm Structure)
Within a Māori worldview, a foundation is not simply physicalit reflects whakapapa, rhythm, and alignment with the taiao (natural world). In the context of maramataka Māori (the lunar calendar), all beginnings are guided by phases of growth, rest, and renewal.

The early phases of the moon, such as Whiro through to Ōkoro , are often associated with stillness, potential, and careful preparation. These phases emphasise that strong foundations are formed through intention, patience, and balance , rather than urgency.

The arm structure of the mobile represents this idea of tūāpapa a steady and considered base that holds and supports. It reflects the importance of creating environments for pēpi that are grounded, calm, and in tune with natural cycles , rather than overstimulating or rushed

2. Te Hā The Breath (Speaker Component)
In te ao Māori, “hā" (breath) is deeply significant. It refers to the breath of life , connected to the concept of mauri (life force). The well-known expression “tihei mauri ora" acknowledges the moment of breath as the beginning of life and awareness.

The speaker component reflects Te Hā by introducing te reo Māori, waiata, and natural sounds of Aotearoa into pēpi’s space. These are not just sounds, but carriers of language, memory, and connection.

Exposure to te reo Māori from an early age supports language acquisition , while natural sounds such as manu (birds), wai (water), and hau (wind) help pēpi become familiar with the rhythms of the environment. This aligns with Māori perspectives that learning begins through listening, observing, and connecting.

Te Ao Maramataka — The World of Maramataka (Hanging Mobile Piece)
The hanging elements of the mobile draw from the understanding that pēpi exists within a wider cosmic and environmental system. In mātauranga Māori, the maramataka is not only a calendar, but a framework that reflects the interconnected relationships between the moon, environment, and living beings.

Each phase of the moon carries different qualities that influence energy, behaviour, and activity. While traditionally applied to practices like planting, fishing, and gathering, these rhythms also reflect a broader understanding that all life including pēpi moves through cycles of stimulation, rest, and growth.

The mobile piece represents Te Ao Maramataka by visually surrounding pēpi with elements that reflect connection to te taiao, to ancestors, and to natural cycles. Rather than being purely decorative, it acknowledges that pēpi are born into a world shaped by rhythm, balance, and relationship.
