Polystichum vestitum
a robust and attractive New Zealand native fern, valued for its strong architectural form and lush presence in shaded garden spaces. It produces firm, dark green fronds with a distinctive prickly texture, complemented by rich brown, papery scales along the central stems. With age, the plant gradually develops a short upright trunk, adding to its sculptural appeal.
Naturally found in forest understories throughout New Zealand, it thrives in semi-shaded to shaded positions with consistently moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Hardy and evergreen, it is well suited to native plantings, woodland gardens and sheltered borders, providing year-round structure and texture.
